Cowboys’ pre-camp urgency starts with age at quarterback, owner

Dallas is heading into training camp with a lot resting on age. Jerry Jones isn’t hiding from it.

The calendar really doesn’t care because it’s not changing a bit.

Camp starts in less than two weeks, and the Cowboys enter this stretch with the weight of two straight playoff misses on their shoulders.

Dallas hasn’t reached the postseason in either of the last two years, and most of that trouble traces back to a defense that couldn’t stop the best college teams consistently.

The front office spent the offseason trying to fix that, handing the keys to first-year coordinator Christian Parker and hoping for a jump from worst to at least respectable.

That defensive overhaul is part of why analyst Brad Gagnon at Bleacher Report picked one word to sum up the Cowboys’ mood before camp opens.

He called it urgent, and he didn’t stop there.

Gagnon called this stretch “typical in Cowboys camp, but that’s especially the case ahead of what could be a make-or-break year for this core (and possibly staff as well) after a defensive facelift in the offseason.”

That word fits a team that always plays under a national spotlight. But this year, the pressure carries an extra layer.

Age is pushing the clock forward

Dak Prescott turns 33 this month.

He’s still the guy, but it’s fair to start wondering how many more prime years he has left before Dallas needs a succession plan at quarterback.

Prescott is also entering his 11th season. Roger Staubach retired after his 11th season of pro football after a stretch of military service after winning the Heisman Trophy at Navy.

Jones feels that same clock ticking, just from a different chair.

He turns 84 in October, and he’s said flat out that his own age is shaping how he runs things now. Jones admitted last year that “I have a natural urgency because of my age. My immediate tomorrows are a big thing to me.”

That’s a rare bit of honesty from an owner who’s usually more guarded about what’s driving his decisions.

It also explains why Dallas doesn’t feel like a team content to wait around for things to develop slowly.

Still, this isn’t a franchise standing at a cliff’s edge. Prescott and most of the current core aren’t fading out.

They should have several more competitive years in them if the pieces around them hold up.

Coaching staff gets more rope for now

Don’t expect Jones to make coaching changes after this season unless things fall apart badly. He bet heavily on coach Brian Schottenheimer, and two years won’t be enough time to walk away from that bet.

Schottenheimer should get at least one more year, especially if the offense keeps doing its job and any playoff miss traces back to defense again.

That defense is squarely on Parker’s plate now, and it wouldn’t make sense to pull the plug on him after just one season running a unit full of new faces.

Offensive coordinator Klayton Adams fits into that same picture. He’s likely safe for another year in Dallas, even though his name keeps coming up as a future head coaching candidate elsewhere.

So the urgency isn’t really about panic.

It’s about a roster and a front office that both know their windows won’t stay open forever, and a coaching staff that gets one more shot to prove last year wasn’t the ceiling.

For Dallas, that combination of an aging quarterback, an aging owner and a retooled defense makes training camp feel less like a formality and more like the start of something that needs to work now.
