Schottenheimer Lists $3.8M McKinney Home After Wild Animal Invasions
Cowboys coach is selling his home mainly to reduce drive to Frisco, but getting away from animal invasions playing role.
There’s a real estate story making the rounds in North Texas right now and it’s got a little bit of football and a whole lot of wildlife attached to it.
Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer has put his McKinney home on the market with an asking price of $3.8 million.
That’s a big number but it’s the backstory that’ll get you talking.
The coach’s stated reason for moving is simple enough. According to Neal Franklin of The Dallas Morning News, Schottenheimer’s current home sits about 15 miles from The Star in Frisco, where the Cowboys hold their practice and front office operations.
That means he’s putting in roughly a 30-minute commute each way on a regular basis and he’d rather not.
Coaches work long hours and trimming that drive time can add up to real rest and recovery.
That part makes total sense. But the house he’s leaving behind?
It’s got a reputation that goes well beyond square footage and granite countertops.
Owls, Snakes and Wasps … Oh My
During the 2025 NFL season, the Schottenheimer home became something of a wildlife hotspot.
It started with snakes. Coach Schotty mentioned that his dogs had been bitten by snakes, which was alarming enough on its own. But then things got a lot stranger.
While Schottenheimer was deep in a game-planning meeting one night working through red zone situations his phone was going haywire.
When he stepped out around 10 o’clock and checked his messages, he had 72 unread texts waiting for him.
As he told the story himself, the reason for all those messages was that an owl had found its way inside the house while he was at work.
He joked that 72 texts weren’t exactly unusual for a popular guy like himself. He also wondered out loud whether the owl had followed the trail of snakes that had been bothering his dogs.
Animal control was called in and the owl was safely returned to the wild. Schottenheimer, to his credit, kept his sense of humor about the whole thing.
He pointed out that the team had actually won the week the snakes showed up, so maybe the critters were good luck. He even joked that he’d put an elephant in his garage if it meant more victories for the Cowboys.
Dallas wound up losing to the Arizona Cardinals that week though, so the owl didn’t deliver the same results as the snakes.
The Invasions Didn’t Stop There
If one animal story was funny, two was a full-on pattern.
Not long after the owl made its memorable appearance, things escalated. Schottenheimer’s wife recorded and shared a video of wasps that had moved into the home.
That clip spread around social media fast and plenty of fans who saw it offered the same suggestion: maybe it’s time to find a new house.
Less than a year after those posts went viral, that’s exactly what’s happening. The family’s McKinney home is now officially on the market.
To be clear, the wasps and the owl aren’t the reason for the move — the commute is. But it’s hard not to connect the dots a little bit.
The Schottenheimers have some stories to tell about that place and they can probably laugh about them now from a safe distance.
Whether they’re settling into a new home closer to Frisco or still searching, Schotty will head into the 2026 season with a shorter drive and a lot of memorable dinner-party material from the house he left behind.
Snakes, owls, wasps … it’s not a typical homeowner’s tale, but then again, life in the NFL rarely is.
